Brexit supporters have hit back at claims that Britain’s exit from the European Union has left the UK “weaker, poorer and more isolated”.
The claim was made in response to far-right French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen, who said she wanted to create a ‘sovereign France’ after making it to the second round on April 24 . Writer Mary Riddell tweeted: “Beware, French voters, of the ‘sovereign France’ promised by far-right Marine Le Pen.
“Ask yourself if Brexit has brought a single benefit. The answer is no. The UK is weaker, poorer and more isolated. You already have sovereignty. So do we.”
The tweet caused a storm on Twitter as Brexiteers rushed to defend Britain from Brexit.
BruceCrutchley, mimicking the original tweet, replied: “Rejoice, French voters, to the ‘sovereign France’ promised by Marine Le Pen.
“Ask yourself if Brexit has brought a single benefit. The answer is yes. The UK is stronger, richer and more global.
Another Twitter user, Monika4557924, responded to Ms Riddell’s tweet: “Not true. The war in Ukraine has shown that. The UK is independent and can provide unlimited aid to Ukraine without wait for no decision from the EU. Just compare the actions of France and the UK.”
